Topic A: Microbial communities (natural or synthetic), co-cultures and cascades of microorganisms for new products, value-added products and supply services as well as sustainable industrial processes.
We have expertise in experimental toxicology, in particular in genetic toxicology including expertise in the application of systems biology tolls. The studies are focused on exploring the mechanisms of toxicity and genotoxicity of dietary carcinogens, natural toxins, manmade pollutants including identification of molecular biomarkers of exposure effects and development of new bioassays. Using the same approaches we also conduct studies on searching and evaluation of the efficiency of natural products as potential chemopreventive substances against environmental stress (i.e. antioxidative, antigenotoxic, anticarcinogenic activity).
In the project aiming to develop bio-products intendent for human or agricultural use we can provide efficiency and safety studies during the product development as well as the assessment of the final products.
The National Institute of Biology (NIB) is the third largest independent Public Research Institution for Life Sciences in Slovenia. It is non-profit organisation supported by grants from the Slovenian Research Agency, Slovenian Ministries and international grants including EU schemes. We also conduct contract research for different customers. At NIB we perform basic and applied research in the fields of biology, toxicology, biotechnology, medicine and ecology. NIB operates according to quality management system certified under ISO 9001, has accredited laboratories according to ISO17025 for qualitative and quantitative detection of genetically modified organisms in food and feed, and is certified to conduct mutagenicity studies according to the OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice. NIB has state of the art laboratory facilities including equipped laboratories for maintaining and working with cell cultures equipped laboratories for molecular biology and genomic analyses.
