Topic B: Pure cultures, cell free systems and enzymes for new products, value-added products and supply services as well as sustainable industrial processes.
The UVIGO AA1 Group has a long expertise in the field of enzyme and protein technology applied to the development and optimization of biotechnological processes with emphasis in the food sector. We worked on the production and purification and biochemical characterization of microbial enzymes, mainly hydrolases (wild type and recombinant). We have applied these enzymes in different processes: esterases for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure targeted compounds, proteases for obtaining peptides with selected bioactivities or fungal xylanases and feruloyl esterases for the hydrolysis of the hemicellulosic fraction of lignocellulosic materials with the aim to produce ferulic acid and xylooligosaccharides. We are also interested on the development of micro- and nanostructures for the encapsulation of bioactive food ingredients in order to improve their stability and/or to impart new rheological properties to food systems. Within this context we have worked with different biopolymers such us proteins from food wastes (whey and tuna fish waters) to create micro and nanoparticles, nanotubes or nanofibers.
The University of Vigo, UVIGO, located at Vigo, Galicia, has three university campuses - in Vigo, Ourense and Pontevedra - with 22.000 students, 1.600 faculty staff and 700 administration and service staff. UVIGO covers all major academic disciplines in Arts and Humanities, Social Science, Cultural Science, Human Medicine, Business Science and Natural Sciences. Currently, the UVIGO offers 41 undergraduate degrees, all of them already adapted to EHEA, 57 master and 38 doctorate programmes.
UVIGO has managed more than 39 European Projects (FP7 & H2020) in the last years (period 2008-2015). UVIGO has successfully managed over 18,5 M € in grants received from diverse EU funds and programmes (FP7 and H2020) in the last years (period 2008-2017). In FP7 UVIGO has participated in 31 projects, 10 of them as project leader and underlining 10 projects under Marie Curie (6 as coordinator).
