3rd Call: Bio-based replacement products, technologies and processes
- Mechanical physico-chemical modeling as a tool for deepening understanding, prediction and optimization in (bio)pharmaceutical research, development and production.
- Modeling of active substance synthesis.
- Modeling of crystallization and dissolution (nucleation, growth, agglomeration and breakage of crystals) by population balance modeling.
- Incorporating the influence of equilibrium, transport phenomena (heat and mass transfer) and chemical reaction kinetics.
- Determination of fluid flow characteristics using Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with OpenFOAM (finite volume method).
- Chemical reactor/mixing vessel fingerprinting. Analysis of the hydrodynamic characteristics for efficient scale-up/down and technology transfer.
- Process modeling with ASPEN Plus, HYSYS and DWSIM.
- The finite element method for multiphysics.
- Optimization of processes and sensitivity analysis under variations of different operating conditions (cooling rate, mixing speed).
- Application of process analysis technologies (PAT): FTIR and FBRM.
- Ab initio methods: ab initio calculation of the activation energies of reactions, DFT – density functional theory, Kinetic Monte Carlo.
- Software development in Python.
Department of Catalysis and Chemical Reaction Engineering is primarily invested in chemical (process) engineering, reactor and unit operation design and construction, as well as multi-scale process modelling. The Department topics foremost include carbon dioxide and natural gas conversion, hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, biomass valorisation to bio-based compounds, and (bio)pharmaceutical processes.
The Department is a part of the National Institute of Chemistry, which is a scientifically excellent, established and breakthrough research institution based in Europe. With our cutting-edge research, we are enriching the global treasury of knowledge by solving the most pressing challenges facing society including: health, sustainable energy, climate change, a circular economy and safe food. Our research goals push the boundaries of science and create new values. We successfully transfer knowledge to industry and, in the long-term, support the role of science in the development of society.
