3rd Call: Bio-based replacement products, technologies and processes
We offer biomass waste-to-energy valorisation technologies to get alternative fuels (biohydrogen, biogas or biomethane) oriented to replace unsustainable industrial processes. We have access to several WWTPs, municipal solid waste plants, primary sector, livestock industry and other sources of feedstock.
OUR CAPACITIES:
- Biogas: New optimisation methods for anaerobic digestion process
- Biohydrogen: H2 generation from biological resources, use as an alternative fuel
- Biomethane: Biogas upgrading systems to obtain biomethane by innovative low-cost methods such as biological methanation.
- Volatile Fatty Acids and other compounds production from Anaerobic Digestion of Organic Residues
- Computational modelling of the anaerobic digestion process
- Agroforestry biomass: valuation of waste by thermochemical valuation and obtention of improved biofuels
- Application of natural gas, biogas and biomethane as alternative fuel in internal combustion engines
- Application of eco-innovation and circular economy strategies
OUR FACILITIES: - Specialized scientific and technological equipment to characterise both the products and waste from anaerobic digestion (biogas and digestates) and the biogas cleaning and purification process. - Space to study new biogas cleaning and upgrading (biomethane) in-lab methods which are economically attractive. Among them, it must be underlined: - Column for Chemical Absorption - Reactor to grow Hydrogenotrophic Archaea - CO2 Mineralization System - A photobioreactor to grow microalgae in order to capture CO2 and reduce the concentration of effluent’s nutrients. - It is also possible to accomplish experiments in batch and semi-continuous reactors - Alternative fuel engine test rig, equipped with regenerative braking and two combustion motors (diesel and gasoline). Emissions monitoring system - Gas mixer capable of mixing up to 5 gases. - Programmable laboratory power supply (power profile emulation)
EnergyLab is a technology centre specialised in energy efficiency and sustainability. It is a non-profit private research entity recognised by the European Commission as KET Centre in the European KETs map as a centre specialised in biotechnology.
Web: https://energylab.es/en/
EnergyLab is currently involved in 15 ongoing R&D projects in the field of energy efficiency, circular economy, biofuels or biorefineries. Among others, in the LIFE ULISES project related to biorefineries from WWTPs, the H2020 project ESI Europe related to the energy-efficiency financing, serveral INTERREG projects (ESTRAEE applying circular economy on WEEEs, BIOMASA AP in the field of forest biomass value chain or NEPTUNUS applying eco-innovation strategies on the Water-Energy-Seafood Nexus).
The centre’s R&D activity covers four main areas:
• Efficient Buildings: this area integrates the energy efficiency and renewable systems to implement in building. This area works on efficient technologies for heating, cooling and efficient lighting, and makes the studies to implement these systems in the sector.
• Industry: this area implements energy efficiency and advances systems in industrial processes with technologies such as air compressed and adjustable speed drivers and, above all, specific systems for monitoring and data processing in industry process and buildings.
• Bioenergy: this area develops projects related to different kind of renewable and alternative energy such as: biogas, biomass, geothermal, wave energy, etc.
• Mobility: this area studies new systems for sustainable mobility: electric mobility, gas mobility, etc.
