3rd Call: Bio-based replacement products, technologies and processes
As a research group named "Membrane technologies for bio-based value-added products (MEMbioVALUE)" in the Department of Environmental Engineering in Istanbul Technical University (ITU), located in Turkey, we are seeking cooperation as a partner for the ERA CoBioTech call in the field of membrane-based technologies for the purpose of separation, purification and fractionation of Volatile Fatty Acids (VFAs). As it has been proven in the literature, membrane-assisted techniques offer a feasible option for cost-effective recovery and fractionation of VFA. Within this context, nowadays the complete range of membrane filtration technologies have been effectively in use for the recovery of important resources from many different organic streams.
Hence, we are very much interested in joining a consortium as a partner providing our expertise and project ideas relevant to the production of specific membrane materials and the development of membrane bioreactors for the evaluation of VFAs (valuable anaerobic digestion intermediates) for different end-use scenarios.
Increasing demand for more sustainable products instead of non-renewable fossil-based products or inputs for the different industries, sustainable and circular approaches increase the desire to create new alternative valuable materials. Therefore, our possible project proposal aims at the conversion of agro-residues into high-value metabolites like VFAs, using natural or augmented microbial consortium for creating the feasible end-use of VFAs.
We offer profound experience with our systems such as;
- ceramic and polymeric pressure-driven membrane test systems,
- forward osmosis module and testing equipment,
- membrane distillation module and testing equipment,
- gas-phase membrane separation test systems,
- membrane bioreactor,
- enzymatic catalytic membrane reactors.
We also have the entire infrastructure for instrumental analysis (GC-MS, HPLC).
At the same time, along with the importance in the production of membrane technologies, production of nanofiber membranes, giving them antibacterial properties, forming catalytic surface with enzymes, thin-film coating methods for membranes with higher separation performance, membrane production, and characterization processes in accordance with the standards can also be performed in our laboratories.
Based on the mentioned explanations above, we are interested in participating in a collaborative project to develop novel and feasible technology integrations on the route for recovery of value-added materials from rejected residuals together with our expertise on "biotechnological approaches" so that we can combine a great project idea all together.
Istanbul Technical University (ITU) which has 15 faculties is the world's third oldest technical university dedicated to engineering sciences and is one of the most prominent educational institutions in Turkey. ITU took the first place among universities in Turkey in the field of "Engineering and Technology" and 242nd in the world according to QS rankings (commissioned by the Higher Education Council (YOK)).
The Environmental Engineering Department (EED) of ITU, being one of the leading departments of the Turkish Republic in the field of environmental engineering education and research, had first started as a graduate program in 1973 within the School of Civil Engineering. Our laboratories have experience in a range of processes with many different focused areas in different projects.
