Project Abstract

The SYNBIOGAS project aims to design and validate synthetic landfill microbiomes for enhanced biomass conversion to biogas in landfill sites and Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants. We will combine isolation and genomic analysis of microorganisms with enzyme characterisation and metabolic network modelling, to design and test synthetic landfill microbiomes for biomass conversion. Synthetic landfill microbiomes have potential to enhance biomass conversion in AD and landfill systems towards an enhanced bio-based economy for waste management, environmental protection, and sustainable intensification of renewable energy generation.

SYNBIOGAS is funded by the ERA CoBioTech partners: UKRI-InnovateUK, ANR and BMBF.
